On the 22 instant I had the honour to
inform you by telegram that assurance had been given to Mr.
Scott, Consul at Canton, that the Ministers were safe in Peking
on the 18th.instant.
2. I have the honour to enclose for your in-
formation a letter with its enclosure received by the Colo-
nial Secretary from Mr.Scott. Before this despatch has been
received the truth or otherwise of the statement will be
known. I earnestly hope that by that time our fears will
have been dissipated.
